Red Deer Public Library (“RDPL”), a vibrant and progressive agency in a dynamic city, seeks a visionary leader, well connected in the profession, who is able to lead the organization into the future of library service.

RDPL is an award winning library and has a rich history as one of the first four libraries established under the Libraries Act of Alberta in 1914. Today the library consists of three branches (Downtown, Dawe and Timberlands), employs over 80 staff, and has an annual budget of $5.1 million. Its mission is to enrich lives by promoting literacy and providing access to knowledge and culture, as set out in the Plan of Service 2016-2018. RDPL is governed by Red Deer Library Board (“the Board”), consisting of one representative from City Council and nine members of the public.

The Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”) of RDPL is responsible for providing strategic leadership and vision to the organization and leveraging high quality public library service to enhance community development. The CEO is also Secretary-Treasurer of the Board and reports to its two standing committees.  The CEO plans, organizes and manages all facets of RDPL operations to meet the needs of the communities served by public library services within the strategic, policy and financial framework established by the Board. The CEO is also an important figure in the community, a cornerstone of the advocacy strategy and engages with a number of external stakeholders that contribute to the success of RDPL.

The ideal candidate holds a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Studies/Science, has several years of senior management experience in a public library setting, and possesses strong financial, human resources, communication and project management skills. In addition, strong community engagement and labour relations experience is preferred.

Red Deer is an enjoyable city in which to live and work. Ideally located between Calgary and Edmonton, it features an exceptional college, excellent public schools and a wide range of cultural offerings. The area offers a well-developed parks system with trails and river access as well as proximity to the mountains. Red Deer house prices are reasonable, everything is within a 20 minute drive and the choice of public transit or bike lanes also exists in this thriving community.
