John Lemieux appointed as University Secretary at the University of Alberta

Congratulations to John Lemieux on his recent acceptance of the role of University Secretary at the University of Alberta, effective August 1, 2023.

 

As University Secretary, John will be the newest addition to the President’s executive team and will have overall responsibility for the University Governance Unit, providing leadership and expertise to ensure the effective operation and administration of the university’s bi-cameral system of governance. He will serve as the most senior advisor and counselor on governance-related matters and the associated legislative and administrative policy and procedures. His team will also oversee the Judiciary branch of university governance, which administers the final level of student appeals under various university policies.

 

A proud University of Alberta alumnus, John is an experienced lawyer with a proven commitment to public service and community building. John most recently served as a Partner at the Edmonton office of Dentons Canada LLP, where he was a valued member of the firm’s leadership team. Throughout his legal career, John has focussed on governance matters, regulatory compliance and privacy and cyber security. He brings particular expertise advising post-secondary institutions and school Boards on governance and policy matters. Outside of work, he is an active member of the community, volunteering his time to various organizations, including serving on the Board of the Art Gallery of Alberta.

 

John is known for his ability to collaborate and build consensus to solve sensitive issues in a fair and balanced manner.  We know John will be a valued asset to the University of Alberta. We are excited to see the impact that John will have on the operation and administration of the university’s bi-cameral system of governance.
