Manager, Litigation Counsel – Alberta Lawyers Indemnity Association (WR: 543)

Closed
Alberta, Calgary
Posted 2 years ago

We have partnered with the Alberta Lawyers Indemnity Association (“ALIA”) to help them add a Manager, Litigation Counsel to their team.

ALIA is the member-funded, non-profit corporation that manages Alberta’s indemnity program for private practice lawyers. ALIA operates as a separate financial entity from the Law Society of Alberta, ALIA’s sole shareholder which regulates Alberta’s legal profession in the public interest. ALIA manages approximately 800 claims annually against private practice lawyers.

It’s an exciting time to join ALIA. The organization is building out a new Defence Counsel program, and is looking for a Manager, Litigation Counsel as its first hire on the team. Reporting to ALIA’s General Counsel, the Manager, Litigation Counsel will not only have hands-on carriage of interesting professional liability litigation files, but will also play a key role in the development and build out of ALIA’s new in-house Defence Counsel program. While this small in-house Defence Counsel program will not displace ALIA’s use of external defence counsel, the team will handle litigation files and grow over time.

The successful candidate will have:

  • A minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience (called to the bar in 2014 or earlier) in insurance litigation, or general litigation with significant insurance litigation experience
  • Experience handling professional liability matters
  • An interest and aptitude in inspiring, leading, coaching and mentoring a group of high-performance individuals to maximize their abilities and contributions
  • Experience providing innovative solutions to complex problems
  • Experience drafting pleadings, conducting discoveries and preparing for and conducting trials, as well as in preparing for and participating in settlement negotiations
  • Proficiency in alternative dispute resolution

If this sounds like you and you’d like to learn more about this exciting opportunity, please reach out to Erin Dand at [email protected] or 403-407-1966.
