Posted 3 weeks ago

We are excited to partner with the Calgary Convention Centre Authority (“CCCA”) in its recruitment of two (2) Board Directors for the 2022 Board recruitment cycle. The CCCA operates the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre (“CTCC”) which is owned by the City of Calgary (“the City”). The CTCC has made an exceptional economic impact on the city of Calgary. By facilitating and hosting events for thousands of visitors year after year, not only does the organization add vibrancy and connectivity to the city’s core, but it also plays a role in connecting people to our intellectual capital. By providing opportunities for collaboration at the CTCC, businesses are able to create meaningful relationships with prospective partners in our youthful, dynamic city.

The Board of Directors (“the Board”) of the CCCA oversees the conduct of the CCCA’s business and supervises its management. Management is responsible for the day-to-day conduct of the business. The Board carries out its duties by ensuring that systems are in place to effectively manage the CCCA’s business but does not manage that business on a day-to-day basis. The CCCA is committed to the principles of good governance as a means of achieving its vision.

The Board sets strategies and objectives, identifies risk and complies with fiduciary and legal requirements. It delegates to management the achievement of its annual strategic, financial, marketing and other plans. In carrying out its obligations, the Board is guided by the Mandate the CCCA has been given to it by the City. It also considers the interests of its many stakeholders. In supervising the conduct of the business, the Board, through the Chief Executive Officer (the “CEO”), sets the standards of conduct for the CCCA.

The CCCA seeks to develop a Board whose members possess a keen passion for our city and decisions impacting the community. Board Directors are sought who demonstrate a strategic combination of diverse personal attributes, culture and community, expertise, social capital, competencies and occupational backgrounds so that, collectively, it has access to a broad diversity of experiences, perspectives, knowledge, connections and skills to carry out its governance, planning, stewardship and advocacy functions. The CCCA is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion for service delivery and governance. The CCCA’s Board of Directors serves the needs of Calgary’s diverse community and Board composition aims to reflect the diversity of that community.

Based on the CCCA Board’s most recent skills matrix review, preference for the two upcoming Board appointments in October 2022 will be given to candidates demonstrating expertise in one or more of the following areas: (1) Executive leadership experience; (2) Extensive governance experience serving on not- for-profit, for-profit or Crown Boards/Committees (ICD.D designation preferred); (3) Legal expertise; (4) Federal and/or Provincial government relations, strategic planning, and advocacy experience; (5) Asset/ property management expertise and (6) Strong financial acumen.

Candidates must also be a resident of the City of Calgary and not already serve on a City of Calgary Board, Commission or Committee.

As volunteers, Board Directors commit approximately 6 hours per month to Board-related activities including preparation for and participation in Board and Committee meetings as well as participation in community events. Board Director terms are for four (4) years and term limits are set at two (2) terms. CCCA orientation and training is provided to new Board Directors.

If you are interested in serving on the Calgary Convention Centre Authority Board, kindly forward a cover letter relating the requirements of the foregoing description to your background and a current resume to Susie Besler, Principal at susie@pekarskyco.com.
