Director, Tax Planning – AIMCo (WR: 611)

(“AIMCo”), one of Canada’s largest and most diversified institutional investment fund managers, to help them add a Director, Tax Planning to the team. With over $130 billion of assets under management, AIMCo operates independently from the Government of Alberta, and the majority of its assets under management come from a diverse group of Alberta public sector pension plans. The Director, Tax Planning role
Reporting to the Vice President, Tax, the Director, Tax Planning will participate in all aspects of AIMCo’s tax planning function, including income, withholding, GST (VAT) and local taxes. This Director will play a key role in developing domestic and international investment structures and ensuring optimal tax arrangements are achieved. This Director will be primarily investment-facing and will have exposure to an incredible breadth of international transactions and investments.
Working as a trusted advisor, the Director will be a key resource to the Investment Management Team on a variety of transactions across the portfolio, responsible for identifying areas of tax risk and advising on appropriate mitigation strategies.
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for a collaborative, business-savvy international tax expert who enjoys being part of a cross-functional team and providing best-in-class international tax advice.
This individual will be either a tax lawyer or a CPA and must have at least 10 years of tax planning experience within a major corporation, law or accounting firm. They must also have:
- A deep knowledge of Canadian and international tax laws (particularly US, UK and EU tax concepts)
- Market knowledge related to various infrastructure sectors (eg water, power, roads, pipelines, timber, etc.)
- Knowledge of fundamental finance and capital structuring principles, accounting and macroeconomics
- Comprehensive understanding of tax risk and mitigation strategies
Knowledge of derivative taxation would also be an asset.
