We are proud to be partnering with the Calgary Police Service to help them add the role Legal Counsel – Access & Privacy to their legal team.

 

About the Role

Reporting to the acting General Counsel, this will be a unique hybrid role that involves both litigation and solicitor work. As a litigator, the Legal Counsel will represent the CPS and Chief in a variety of litigation matters including civil court actions and applications, fatality inquiries, and inquiries and reviews before the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta (“OIPC”). As a solicitor, the Legal Counsel will provide legal research, analysis and opinions on a wide variety of privacy matters.

 

This individual will be an important member of the CPS legal team, providing litigation and privacy related legal opinions, research, analysis, and advice to both the CPS, as well as to the Senior and Executive Leadership Teams. This position ensures that the impact of access, disclosure and privacy law on law enforcement duties, operations, administration and initiatives are legally sound and current. This position also assists the CPS in identifying and avoiding issues involving potential legal liability.

 

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for lawyers who bring a minimum of 8 years of strong civil litigation experience. This individual will also:

 

  • Possess excellent advocacy and negotiation skills, with the ability to represent the Calgary Police Service and the Chief in civil court actions and applications, fatality inquiries, as well as in judicial reviews of fatality inquiries and in decisions of the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta
  • Possess superior legal research and analysis skills
  • Be proficient in drafting pleadings, conducting discoveries and preparing for and conducting trials, as well as in preparing for and participating in settlement negotiations

 

Previous experience in privacy-related matters will be strongly preferred. Experience gained in a professional regulatory context would be advantageous.
